Ever have a smoothie save your day?

Last weekend may have been a mistake.

Neeeeeed energy.

A breakfast smoothie! A smoothie that would rescue this day from being a total waste! A blackberry-kefir-chia smoothie, for example…

Oh man. We had way too much fun this weekend! Friends over both days, which led to some serious near-marathon beverage consumption. Truly awesome beer from Mad Fritz, more awesome beer, Italian wine, whiskey… gasoline? Judging by the way we’re dragging ourselves around, it must have been something like gasoline.

We needed something that would get us up and around. Productivity! We needed to be productive and get back to work, and just weren’t in the mood for a big heavy breakfast.  However, we definitely, no-question needed all of the nutrients of a big healthy breakfast. All of the good stuff without a bunch of heaviness to add to our poor overworked systems. This is where the right breakfast smoothie recipe comes in handy!

An unbelievably yummy breakfast smoothie with blackberries, bananas, ginger, chia, flax, and homemade kefir that has the ability to bring you back from the dead! (Or at least from a crazy weekend...) | Tasting Everything http://tastingeverything.comThis blackberry kefir smoothie was exactly what the doctor ordered.  It brought us back from zombie-land. Crazy healthy with homemade kefir (check out this super easy recipe for homemade kefir!), berries, flax, chia, bananas, and ginger. The kefir gave it this awesome probiotic base (they say the probiotics in kefir are even better than those in yogurt, since the yogurt ones pass pretty quickly and the ones in a good kefir will stick around and colonize your system). It also has more protein plus fiber and awesome omegas from the flax and chia, sweet antioxidants from the blackberries, all of the energizing Bs and stomach calming properties of fresh ginger, plus banana potassium happiness! It was also wonderfully chilly and creamy; kind of like a healthy kefir milkshake!

I’m telling you: we drank this breakfast smoothie and felt better immediately! Brought back from the brink of death and able to continue on rather than curl up in a sad ball of grossness.  Up, around, and ready to go! It was a miracle! (An Easter miracle….? Kidding!)

If you’re dragging, I cannot recommend this smoothie enough. It had absolutely everything we needed to get back to the land of productivity. Energizing, invigorating, and seriously yummy!

This breakfast smoothie recipe makes enough for two big glasses, so if you are food-medicating for one, just cut the ingredients in half and it will be fabulous. Also, if you have been freezing your bananas (like we covered in the decadent and amazing sour cream banana bread and the cinnamon chocolate chip banana mini muffins), this is another great place to use them! Avoiding milk? Go ahead and use your favorite dairy substitute here and you’ll still have something awesome.

An incredibly yummy smoothie with blackberries, bananas, chia, flax, and homemade kefir, and fresh ginger that has the ability to bring you back from the dead! (Or at least from a crazy weekend...)
Ingredients
  • 1 cup blackberries (fresh or frozen)
  • 1 cup kefir (or milk of your choice)
  • ½ banana (fresh or frozen)
  • 2 tsp ginger, peeled and grated
  • 1 tsp flax seeds, ground
  • 2 tsp chia seeds
  • ½ cup ice
  • ¼-1/2 cup water, or milk/milk substitute (optional-it will make a thinner smoothie and your blender might need it.)
Instructions
  1. Add all of the ingredients except the ice to your blender and blend well. If it’s too thick, add a little water/milk/milk substitute.
  2. Add the ice and continue to blend well, adding water or kefir if you want to thin the smoothie a bit. (If you have an awesome blender, go ahead and throw everything in together. You might not even need the additional water/milk! My blender insisted…) Pour into a couple of glasses and drink up!
